The witches of Chéu

The archives of the diocese attest to this: in Chéu, between the 6th and the beginning of the 19th century, the inhabitants of the village were obsessed with evil. To ward off evil, they hung crucifixes at every intersection or owls above barns. But when that wasn’t enough, they physically attacked those they thought were witches and accused them of witchcraft.

The “treatment” that the inhabitants inflicted on their victims was violent and without issue: The bewitched person was taken, they tied their feet and hands and they were thrown into the Armançon. If people sank, they were deemed to have been called back by God. If they floated, they were considered possessed, they were hung and burned… But in any case, the outcome was fatal!

It all ended in 1829, when a great fire totally destroyed the village… which was then considered “purified”.

Jean Vaissade or Baron Jeannot

Jean Vaissade, known as “Baron Jeannot” is a manufacturer of replicas of old World War I aircraft.

The planes, built in microlight version, can climb to 3,000 meters in altitude, but most of the time fly at 300 meters high, and at a speed of 120 km/hour. They weigh between 165 and 300 kg, depending on the model.
