Shadows and light in Paris Photo: the most beautiful images of this 2022 edition | Knowledge of the Arts

The 25th edition of the Paris Photo fair returns to the Grand Palais Éphémère from November 10 to 13 with images of great visual power.

Faced with 183 exhibitors from 31 countries and the multiple exhibitions held in Paris Photography at the Grand Palais Éphémère (from November 10 to 13), how not to succumb to the FOMO syndrome (Fear of missing out, “ Fear of missing something )? The stressed visitor will methodically walk the aisles armed with a map, another will let himself be carried away by his own wanderings according to his favorites. The “middle way” consists of locating oneself using the selections offered, underlined by labels on the stalls.

Women in the spotlight

With the “Elles x Paris Photo” course, which promotes the visibility of women artists and their contribution to the history of photography, curator Federica Chiocchetti highlighted a fine selection of works from exhibitors in the main sector, Curiosa (dedicated to emerging art) and the Publishing sector of the fair, from the pioneer Laure Albin-Guillot (Vintage Works gallery) to the young artist Stéphanie Solinas at Delpire & Co.

Guest of honor at this 25th edition of Paris Photo, Spanish actress and artist Rossy de Palma has selected a sublime veiled nude by Herb Ritts at the Edwynn Houk gallery (Female Torso with Veil, Paradise Cove, 1984), a hieratic Fulani Shepherd, Niger River, Mali (1997) by Bernard Descamps at Camera Obscura and an erotic photograph by Mircea Cantor inspired by The origin of the world by Courbet (1998) at the Jecza gallery.

An imperfect beauty

So many black and white images of great visual power that can be found throughout the fair, from old prints to contemporary photos: photograms by Dora Maar at Hans P. Kraus, silver salt prints by Man Ray at the Françoise Paviot gallery, a selection of exceptional works by Eugène Atget, Brassaï and Edward Steichen at Karsten Greve.

Current photographers revisit old photographic techniques, such as Naohiro Ninomiya using the photogram to produce a series of delicate Katami (2013) nourished by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, “imperfect, impermanent and incomplete” beauty (Ibasho gallery) or the Iranian Nazli Abbaspour superimposing butterflies (symbol of metamorphosis and rebirth) on old prints to evoke the past who haunts his generation (Reincarnation2017-2019, Silk Road gallery).

aesthetic shock

A great poetry also crosses the work of Charlotte Dumas who produces silkscreen prints painted in charcoal ink on cotton paper (Three Horses, 2022, Goliga Editions). As for the youngest of the fair, the Austrian-Nigerian David Uzochukwu (born in 1998), he exhibits in the emerging sector of the fair (Curiosa) hybrid creatures which cause both an aesthetic shock and an “ecological and social reflection on climate injustice” (gallery Number 8).
