Willow arrived on Disney+ to an unusual reception, raving critics far more than the original 1988 film but being torn down by audiences. The sequel series has debuted with three episodes so far, which has been a reasonable hit on Disney+. However, it failed to win over many fans, and the series currently has a score of 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, that hasn’t stopped talk of a second season. Showrunner Jonathan Kasdan recently revealed that he’s already begged Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy to allow him to continue Willow’s journey.

Willow’s series takes audiences back to the dark fantasy world of Warwick Davis’ titular hero. It means swords, sorcery, an epic quest, and just a bit of danger and intrigue. While critics have jumped on board the Willow bandwagon, giving the show an 84% approval rating compared to the original film’s 53%, the question is whether audiences will stick with the show enough to earn a second season. However, Kasdan has plenty of ideas and wants the chance to make them happen. He told Comicbook.com:

“We are definitely working on it and I beg Kathy [Kennedy] because working with these actors and this team of filmmakers on this show has been the best experience. We always feel like there are a lot of stories and bigger places to visit. »

When it comes to legacy sequels, whether in the form of a movie or a TV series, it’s expected that certain characters will be featured again in the story in some way. other. As Joanne Whalley joins Warwick Davis on the show, one person notably absent from the opening episodes is Val Kilmer’s Madmartigan. While Kilmer’s health issues have been a huge hurdle for the actor in recent years, it looks like Madmartigan was at one point considered making an appearance on the show. Kasdan previously revealed:

“I approached Val as soon as there was momentum around it. I told him instantly that I wanted him to be part of the story. He really wanted to be, and he was determined to be. And like many things that have happened, COVID made it fly in Wales at that time very hard. It seemed too sad to all of us, and frankly not fair to the story we were telling, that Madmartigan was dead, and therefore, he is not of this world. He returns by the end of the season in as meaningful a way as we thought possible, while leaving the door open to continue building on him. »

Willow’s series is said to have Madmartigan’s spirit running through it, and Kasdan has even speculated about possibly including the character again in future seasons of Willow if he can. While all of that remains to be seen, those who enjoy Willow will be pleased to know that there are still five episodes left and plenty of adventures to come over the next few weeks on Disney+.
