The MCU Connections You May Have Missed – GameSpot

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The latest entry in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has now been released. In true Marvel form, the story is as much about this movie as it is about several future movies and shows that have already been released or are coming soon. As such, we’re not only digging into all the possible spoilers one could want, but also the various connections it has to this larger universe that seems to keep growing with every passing minute. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, get ready because this piece will contain spoilers for that story as well as Marvel’s past and potential future. Let’s dig.

Ant-Man wrote a memoir

We’re starting with the one that’s a bit sillier, but might just be the biggest tie-in to what’s to come in Marvel. The next film, which will begin phase 5, is Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and there was a very quick reference to former convict-turned-superhero Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) has been until these days. No, it has nothing to do with saving the universe or space travel. He actually became a published writer. We learn about it during a program on CNN where AndersonCooper, playing himself, exposes what happens in this film. However, on the lower chyron as he speaks we see a passing reference to how Lang pulls out a memoir. Although we don’t know the contents of it, we can imagine it’s part of how it turns over a new leaf and becomes somewhat popular in the public eye, as seen in the initial trailer for the film. It’s what celebrities all seem to do as memoirs, which you wrote entirely by yourself and without the help of a ghostwriter. It’s a surefire way to get into popular culture.

Moving on to the world of television, a more central element of this film was the character of Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) A.K.A Stone heart who unknowingly invents technology that sparks the conflict between Wakanda and the newly introduced underwater kingdom Talokan. Before all of this, she was just a bright student at MIT who did homework for other students on the side to earn extra money while building her own inventions in a garage. For those who don’t know, she will be the focus of her own TV series which is set to air next year. She is considered the successor to Iron Man due to both her similar suits and her intelligence that allowed her to build them in the first place. In this film, after being found by Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Okoye (Call Gurira), she would eventually join Wakanda by constructing one of said suits and exploiting their advanced technology. While she’s been integral to their success, once it’s all over, we know she’s about to return to her hometown of Chicago for her own adventures and challenges. However, she will bring with her a rebuilt car that Shuri gave her as a parting gift after it was destroyed earlier.

New Treaty of Asgard

For this one, we’re returning to the CNN shows chyron, where we get some quick info on the movie that just preceded it. Specifically, this story takes place around the same time as the events of the recent Thor: Love and Thunder in the massive MCU timeline. It was on the show that we learned more about the inhabitants of Thor’s now-destroyed planet who had settled on Earth and created what they called New Asgard. As we see Cooper providing exposition again, the chyron below him tells us that there was a treaty just signed. What the terms of this deal are and how important they might be to the story is unclear as these are just a few words that pass by pretty quickly. However, it does indicate that things seem to be going relatively well for the Intergalactic Refugees in their new home, as this signing demonstrates that the lines of communication are open and they are practicing some form of diplomacy.

Killmonger returns to Talk Zemo

Just before the film’s final showdown, Shuri seeks to visit her ancestors in the spirit realm to find out what she should do. However, instead of seeing her mother or anyone else, she finds out it’s Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) waiting for him. The central antagonist of the original Black Panther movie, her conversation with Shuri hints that she might be on her way more than she cares to admit. Beyond his looks, he also references a significant event from the previous films that he says demonstrates how weak his deceased brother was. He recalls how he spared Helmut Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) the way back Captain America: Civil War. This reference is his way of both insulting his brother and doing everything he can to push Shuri to be more like him in the way she chooses to rule.

Midnight Angels join the fight

Last, but definitely not least, we got our first glimpse of the Midnight Angels in action as they tried to turn the tide in the final fight. Specifically, these comic book heroes were given brand new blue armor which was later piloted by Okoye and the underused Aneka (Michael Coel). Along the same lines, their perfectly suited appearance was fleeting and, for some who hoped for more from their introduction, didn’t make the most of their potential. However, there may be another chance for them to hopefully be more rooted out and explored in future stories that bring them back for more. Anything that gives Coel more screen time will be a good step in the right direction.
