Every Sunday, The Cross Africa resumes the commentary taken from the missal Let us pray in the Church Africa”, edited by Bayard Afrique. The readings of this 5th Easter Sunday fix our attention on the word ” new “. In fact, the whole Gospel is Good News which contains the novelty par excellence, Christ. It is he who qualifies ” new “ a command well known since Moses: love. He is ” ancient “ because it had been given by God long ago. But its novelty lies in birth in the Holy Spirit.
The Lord loved us with intensity even to the gift of his life on the cross. ” There is no greater love than to lay down your life for those you love. “. It is Christ’s thermometer to measure our love. By loving our brothers like him, we will be able to forgive our enemies and do good to those who persecute us.
The Gospel is for us today the true word of resilience because it refers us to Christ who tells us: love each other as I have loved you “. It is by nourishing ourselves with the words of Christ that we will become witnesses of charity and agents of social cohesion and reconciliation.
This missionary ardor is found in the Acts of the Apostles where Paul and Barnabas tell the Christians of Syria ” how God opened to the pagan nations the door of faith “. The Risen One possesses a force of attraction of love which nothing and no one can resist. Paul himself will say that it would be unfortunate not to announce the Gospel. Our distinctive sign visible to all those who meet us, who see us live, is the necklace or the bracelet of love that we wear. It is our permanent perfume whose smell leaves no one indifferent when we pass by.
The second reading shows us the fruit of Jesus’ resurrection. Without being a book of disaster, the Apocalypse is good news addressed to persecuted Christians and to so many peoples today prey to insecurity, to violence of all kinds so that they discover the love of Christ. conqueror of evil and death. The risen Christ wants to associate us all with his victory.
Today’s text ends with this statement: Behold, I make all things new.” it is a world filled with joy and love where there will be no more suffering or tension. But how far are we prepared to commit ourselves to restoring this new world? If fear haunts us, we can always turn to the Lord to beg him “strengthen our courage because we have to go through many trials to enter your Kingdom. »
