Slowe, the Parisian gym where you take your time

“Harder, better, faster, stronger”, the motto is engraved on the walls… To go faster, you also have to take the time. Recently arrived in the landscape of Parisian sports halls, Slowe Wellness House is a new generation house. With its bright space, its air of a large loft, its scraped walls, its bar and its large bay windows, the address, located in the heart of the most gentrified district of Paris, is a funny place with three heads which mixes practical sports, alternative medicine sessions and coffee-shop.

It must be said that in recent years, sports halls have been revolutionizing and “gym shops” are sprouting up all over Paris. Understand: clubs on a human scale with prices per session according to the “pay as you go” principle, a trend from the United States. At the base of the Slowe project, there is one observation: “the gym is often a dehumanized place where people meet but do not mix, almost ignore each other”says Étienne Penhouët, one of the co-founders.

“Our approach is to make people want to come back to a place where they feel at home. » And for that, they have created an authentic coffee-shop. “People talk to each other, it brings back conviviality, a bit like a counter”continues the former head of partnerships at Carlsberg in music festivals, because “this large bright loft is an opportunity to take care of yourself before returning to your routine”.

His partner Mathieu Magaud was in finance at the Standard & Poor’s rating agency. “He does a lot of sports in the studio and I rather practiced the climbing room, which is a place of life”, continues Penhouët. Between them, they shaped the identity of their room, the fruit of a long reflection but also of setbacks.

In November 2019, they visited a premises at 30, rue d’Enghien, in the Xand district, on March 18, 2020, they must sign when the Covid and confinement cut their momentum. The affair will not be concluded until November 2020. But it will be necessary to wait until June 9, 2021 and the reopening of the sports halls for Slowe to be inaugurated. A typical day starts at 7:30 a.m. with the first classes at 7:45 a.m.

“The room is often a place where people meet but do not rub shoulders”

Concretely two rooms, two atmospheres, with yoga and pilates classes on one side, and HIIT on the other (High Intensity Interval Training, high intensity interval training). These sessions are made up of about ten people and mainly bring together women (10% men in yoga classes, 30 in HIIT classes). When morning classes are over, the coffee shop is running at full speed. Between the two, there are appointment slots with therapists: naturopath, reflexologist, osteopath or astrotherapist…

“We even released a coworking and sports formula. The idea is to come to work at the café with unlimited hot drinks and the possibility of having a sports class included in the day. » Lattes, cappuccinos… rare are the rooms to offer such an advanced coffee-shop offer. In order not to grind a little black between the two confinements, Étienne trained as a barista with the Caféothèque, a great Parisian roaster.

The house offers specialty coffees such as Chitul Tirol from Guatemala, sourced by the Caféothèque, which develops lovely peppery notes upon extraction. The coffee-shop also offers excellent freshly squeezed organic juice bars: detox (celery, apple, cucumber), antioxidant (beetroot, apple, carrot) and vitamin (orange, carrot, lemon)…

To link sport to nutrition and recovery, Slowe also serves homemade energy balls, a protein smoothie with hemp vegetable protein and CBD matcha that helps muscle relaxation after sport. The next step ? Thicken the food offer with savoury, from brunch to take-out… Eating better also makes you stronger.
