(Pocket-lint) – We’ve long been fans of Lenovo’s laptops and, in particular, the Yoga Slim models. They tend to offer an alluring mix of portability, performance, and affordability.

Lenovo’s lineup is vast and includes configurable options at just about every price point, but with so many models to choose from it can make things a bit confusing. We tested the 14-inch Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro X. The name is a bit long, but it seems like a strong contender for on-the-go content creation.

Our model has almost all the optional upgrades, making it a real show-stopper, but it can also be configured with much more modest specs for a significantly lower price.

POCKET-LINT VIDEO OF THE DAY

We used it for both work and play during testing, and here’s what we learned.

Our quick review

If you’re serious about working on the go and don’t want to be bogged down with a bulky workstation or gaming machine, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro X is worth considering. The construction is flawless and we think it looks very stylish, especially in Dark Teal colour.

The construction is flawless and we think it looks quite stylish, especially in the “Dark Teal” color. A powerful processor and dedicated graphics card mean it’s particularly suited to video editing and content creation. Plus, when you’re done with your work, it’s powerful enough for you to play alongside.

There are a few flaws, the webcam and speakers aren’t very impressive and we would have liked to see an OLED option available. But, overall, it’s a solid machine that shouldn’t be overlooked.

4.5 stars – Pocket-lint recommended

For

  • Excellent build quality and design
  • Superb keyboard and touchpad
  • Solid performance
  • Good connectivity.
Versus

  • The webcam is not impressive
  • No OLED option
  • Battery life could be better.

Design

  • Dimensions: 328.2 x 221.4 x 15.9mm
  • Weight: 1.45kg
  • Dark Teal or Cloud Gray aluminum alloy chassis

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro X makes a great first impression with its solid, sturdy shell and very attractive “Dark Teal” colorway. It is made of aluminum alloy and is cool to the touch with soft, chamfered edges. It looks and feels premium in every way.

It’s not the lightest 14-inch laptop, nor the thinnest, but it’s still very portable. The difference between carrying this model and a model like the XPS 13 Plus is negligible in the real world, and that’s particularly impressive considering that the Lenovo is equipped with a discrete graphics card, a bigger screen and a more powerful processor.

The Slim 7i Pro X has a decent array of ports: a full-size HDMI port and two Thunderbolt 4 ports along the left side, with a USB-A and headphone jack on the right. It charges via USB-C, so it’s worth noting that one of those Thunderbolt ports will be busy while charging.

The keyboard is spacious and comfortable to type with good spacing between the keys. Key travel is substantial and actuation is quite tactile, almost clicky, which we found quite satisfying and very easy to pick up. The backlight is quite efficient and can turn on automatically in low-light scenarios, which is both convenient and battery-saving.

The trackpad is massive, glides well, and is very responsive. It supports all the usual Windows multi-touch gestures and has a solid click mechanism that doesn’t rattle and doesn’t require too much force.

Screen, speakers and webcam

  • 14.5 inch IPS screen, 3072 x 1920 pixel resolution.
  • 16:10 aspect ratio, 400 nits, 100% sRGB
  • Two 2W upward-firing stereo speakers
  • 1080p webcam with Windows Hello support

The display offers 3K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Such a fast refresh rate is rare on productivity-focused laptops normally reserved for gaming machines, so we were happy to see it here.

The screen is covered in a glass coating, which adds to the premium look and feel, and an anti-glare coating helps prevent glare. Of course, reflections are to be expected in bright scenarios, the special coating can’t do everything. However, we never found this to be a problem indoors.

Given the glass covering, we assumed we were working with a touchscreen model, but that wasn’t the case. The touchscreen is an option (costing around £50) and it’s about the only configuration option that wasn’t added to our test unit.

The screen is crisp and clear, with natural colors and good contrast. It’s not on the same level as an OLED screen, of course, but we can expect better battery life with this IPS option. We were surprised there wasn’t an option to configure the laptop with an OLED display, however, especially at this price range.

The speakers are detailed and have decent stereo separation thanks to their placement on either side of the keyboard. Don’t expect them to blow your mind, as they are sorely lacking in bass and can’t be particularly loud. They’re fine for Zoom calls and watching YouTube at home, but we’d recommend pairing them with decent headphones for any serious content consumption.

The webcam is 1080p, so it offers more detail than its 720p rivals, but we weren’t terribly impressed with the image fidelity. Dynamic range is poor, and you’ll often end up with a blown-out background or an overexposed face. In all but the most ideal lighting scenarios, images become grainy very quickly. Still, that’s probably enough for your work meetings, and we were happy to find a physical privacy button to mute the webcam when not in use.

Performance and battery

  • Intel Core i7 12700H, 14 cores, up to 4.7 GHz
  • 32GB LPDDR5 and 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 4GB GDDR6
  • 70 Wh battery, 100W USB-C charger included

With an Intel i7 12700H, RTX 3050, fast storage, and plenty of RAM, the Yoga Slim 7i Pro X will tackle most tasks without breaking a sweat. The dedicated GPU is especially useful if you’re editing video and really speeds up your render times.

Those specs also mean it’ll be able to handle some games without issue, and to us that’s a pretty attractive proposition. Gaming laptops are typically thicker, heavier devices with garish aesthetics and plastic construction. We were impressed with the performance of the Lenovo, which combines gaming prowess with a solid build, lightweight chassis and low-profile design, which is a big win for us.

In GTA V at 1080p resolution, the laptop managed a solid 110fps when plugged into AC power. On battery power, with Windows set to performance mode, results were less consistent but gaming stayed north of 60fps, frequently hovering around 80fps. Not bad for such a thin and light device.

Sure, battery life is reduced if you’re gaming on the go, but the same can be said for most dedicated gaming laptops. When you don’t have the RTX 3050 flexing its muscles, battery life is much more reasonable, typically around 7-10 hours.

It comes with a 100W USB-C charger in the box, which Lenovo claims will get you over 3 hours of extra battery life in just 15 minutes. We found it took under an hour and a half to fully charge the device, which is plenty quick enough for us – and the power brick isn’t too heavy, either.

To recap

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro X is a powerful laptop with a superb lightweight build. If you’re looking to do some serious content creation on the go, this template shouldn’t be ignored.
