From Yoga Wall to Pickleball: 5 unusual sports to try

Do yoga upside down against a wall, drift on a frozen lake or find your balance on a floating board? It’s possible ! Get out of your comfort zone with these five relatively new or original sports.

1.The Yoga Wall

What is that ?

The Yoga Wall is a hovering form of yoga. Literally, because you’re hanging from a wall with ropes and straps. It sounds intimidating said like that, but it’s very accessible. Thanks to the straps, you even have more stability and support than during a regular yoga session. And the postures that we chain are felt to be more intense and more effective.

How ?

To practice the Yoga Wall, you need a yoga wall specially designed for it, a pelvic belt – a strap that is attached around the pelvis – and several other accessories such as handles and rubber bands. By attaching the handles to the wall, one can adopt positions to stretch or train the muscles. “By practicing the Yoga Wall, you actively develop your range of motion,” explains Canadian Julie Henneberg, yoga coach at Neshama, in Hasselt. “You can adapt the resistance of your straps and thus create more space around the joints. »

For who ?

You don’t need to be an ultra-flexible yogi to get started with Yoga Wall. Even beginners can try simple poses, with a little help from an experienced coach like Julie. In his studio it is possible to follow courses accompanied by Yoga Wall. “Is it open to everyone? Of course, everyone can do something in Yoga Wall. There are also a lot of postures where you keep contact with the ground, it’s less impressive. But the more experienced you are, the more options there are, of course.”

2. Pickleball

Pickleball was born in America in 1965, on Bainbridhe Island.

Pickleball was born in the United States in 1965, when dads from Bainbridhe Island imagined this game for their children.

What is that ?

Have you ever played tennis, badminton or table tennis? Pickleball is a mixture of all of these and is already referred to as the “new padel”. This racket game – born in the United States – is the big trend of the moment. And there are good reasons for that: the technique is easy to learn and it is not at all tiring for the muscles.

How?

Even though pickleball is very similar to tennis, there are still some differences. The court is smaller, the racquets too and they are square, the balls are plastic and the rules are a bit different. All the rules are precisely detailed on this site.

For who ?

Pickleball is described as a sport “for the whole family”. And if initially it was more popular among seniors, in recent years it has convinced all age groups.

What is that ?

We have a lot to learn from the Scandinavians. Including how to float on a frozen lake to find absolute serenity. Ice Floating – that’s the name of this popular winter practice – requires very little physical effort and rather leads to a state of zen. But unlike ice baths, where you swim in a lake without a wetsuit, with Ice Floating, the body does not come into contact with water.

How ?

To attempt Ice Floating, you need a waterproof suit that will keep you completely dry while floating. The pressure of the water embraces your body and allows you to wait for complete relaxation, physical and mental.

Where?

Since frozen lakes are not really common in Belgium, you will have to reach colder areas to practice this activity.

What is that ?

The Float Fit is a very fashionable English branch of fitness that was imported to us a while ago. What to expect? At a group lesson on the water, often a simple swimming pool, where you stand on a board.

How ?

During a Float Fit session, the goal is to do endurance and weight training exercises for 30 minutes on a board, all without losing your balance. Even if the unpredictable movements of the water make it all more complicated. The objective is to ensure its balance throughout the session. Thus, we not only work on our balance but also on our endurance, coordination and muscles.

For who ?

The Float Fit is a sport that is suitable for both beginners and advanced. This discipline is also recommended for those who have knee or joint problems. The context is actually much less stressful than when training on a hard surface.

What is that ?

Bossaball is a mixture of football, volleyball and gymnastics. And we practice this sport accompanied by Latin American music. Hence the name “bossaball”, since bossanova is a Brazilian musical genre. You may find it hard to believe, but this game was invented in Spain in 2005 by a Belgian, Filip Eyckmans, ex-manager of the Belgian group dEUS. It has since developed into an internationally recognized sport.

How ?

This singular sport is practiced on an inflatable field equipped with trampolines. The court borrows several characteristics from volleyball while the technical aspects come from volleyball and football. What about large airbags? They stimulate the acrobatic and “samba” side of the game.

For who ?

This sport requires a lot of technique, but anyone can do it. Curious to see what it looks like? Watch the video below.

Where?

Bossaball is practiced in sports centers, or you can bring it to your home, as this club in Mortsel offers.

In the Netherlands, bossaball is a little better known: you can train in almost any city.
