Yoga no longer holds any secrets for you. But do you know eye yoga? This gentle practice would relieve eye fatigue, an increasingly common disorder associated with excessive use of screens. On the occasion of World Sight Day, Thursday October 13, we tell you all about this decades-old gymnastics, and its benefits on visual fatigue.

Computer, tablet, smartphone… We no longer count the hours spent in front of the screens, and even less the evils that can be associated with it. If you spend your days in front of one of these devices, you have probably already felt discomfort in your eyes, especially at the end of the day, which can result in dryness, irritation, blurred vision, or even headache. Symptoms likely to evoke asthenopia, in other words visual fatigue. A harmless disorder, but which can generate some discomfort on a daily basis. This is why some ophthalmologists now recommend eye yoga, a practice with multiple benefits.

Quésaco the yoga of the eyes?

Like any form of yoga, this kind of eye gymnastics is based on a series of eye exercises intended to train and strengthen the muscles associated with this area. According to The Noémie de Rothschild Laser Vision Institutespecializing in refractive surgery, eye yoga is a technique “inspired by traditional Ayurvedic medicine, [et] developed by Doctor Bates and Doctor Agarwal in 1920, [qui] aims to improve visual function based on the anatomy of the eye and the natural functioning of the gaze and the eyes”.

Like other muscles in the body, through training, the oculomotor muscles tire less quickly, reducing visual fatigue and other symptoms associated with excessive screen use in the long term. Many health professionals also agree that eye yoga would be beneficial for attention, and even more so for sleep.

    Two exercises against eyestrain

While it is advisable to practice eye yoga with an experienced professional, there are several exercises you can do at home to strengthen the oculomotor muscles, or fight against dryness, starting with blinking – or blinking. It may seem trivial, but forcing the eye blink can help to better distribute the tear film on the surface of the eye, and therefore better cleanse and protect it.

The Laser Vision Noémie de Rothschild Institute recommends the pencil exercise, which consists of fixing a pencil held outstretched, at eye level, between the index finger and the thumb. It is then a question of bringing the object closer to the face, without letting go of it, while exhaling, then moving it away in the same way while inhaling. A movement to be repeated several times to relieve visual fatigue, and prevent it from coming back too frequently.

If the yoga of the eyes appears beneficial to fight against eye fatigue, it also seems necessary to look for all the causes. If the problem is recurrent, a consultation may be required to check if your optical correction is (really) optimal.
