The Craft, the new witches (Canal+ Cinéma): what is the link with the film Dangereuse alliance/The Craft with Neve Campbell?

Released in October 2020 in French cinemas, The Craft, the new witches is appearing tonight for the first time on television on Canal+ Cinéma. The title of the film is reminiscent of a feature film from the 1990s, with the delicious neve campbell in one of the main roles: Dangerous alliance (The Craft in VO). The actress who announced her departure from the saga Scream and who deeply marked fans of the series La vie à cinq played Bonnie, a teenager who discovered witchcraft with her friends (nothing to do with the affair which recently shook the world of French reality TV). Among the latter, the new high school girl, camped by Robin Tunney, known for her role as Lisbon in Mentalist. The small group of friends will soon discover that their powers can have consequences beyond them…

The Craft, the new witches : another story ?

Intended primarily for teenagers, The Craft, the new witches follows the adventures of Hannah, a high school student who moves in with her mother in the house of her new boyfriend. There, she receives a very cold welcome from her three sons. And in her new high school, she suffers humiliation from Timmy, a popular boy. She finds solace in three comrades. These induct him into witchcraft. Hannah discovers that she has incredible powers and intends to use them for her own benefit and to get revenge on the people who have hurt her. But she quickly loses control and finds herself drawn into an infernal spiral… Very close but not identical, the story of The Craft, the new witches undeniably reminds one of Andrew Fleming’s 1990 film.

The Craft, the new witches : between remake and sequel

In fact, the film shown this evening on Canal+ Cinéma is part of a new genre, a new category of films: the request. Or legacywhat. Kezako? A project located somewhere between the remake and the sequel. Basically, the scenario is close. Sometimes very close, even. But for all that, it’s not a copy of the original story, because the latter is supposed to have taken place in the new universe. Iconic case of the requel? Scream 2022. Either the fifth opus of the saga which bears the same title as the very first and seems to want to be both a sequel to the misadventures of Sydney Prescott (camped also by neve campbell) in the face of the various masked killers, but also a review of the concept. A new start in a way.

As a result, the question that arises is: must we have seen Dangerous alliance to understand or appreciate The Craft, the new witches ? Let’s be honest: no. The two films follow each other very well without being connected to each other. But… to understand certain nods, certain references from The Craft, it is probably better to have the 1996 film in mind.
