Rennes – Brittany: a school of wizards inspired by Harry Potter will open its doors

Who does not know the famous Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Its large room, its huge library, its room on demand, its paintings that come to life or even its disturbing forbidden forest. If we told you that it will soon be possible to visit this high place of the Harry Potter saga… in Brittany.

This somewhat crazy idea is to be credited to Manuel Roussel, owner since 2016 of Château Le Rocher Portail, located in Maen Roch, in the north-east of Ille-et-Vilaine. “In the castle, we had a huge room that really looked like the large common room at Hogwarts, with almost the same dimensions as the original,” explains the industrialist from the region. “From there, we had the idea of recreating a Breton school of magic inspired by the world of Harry Potter”.

Breton Hogwarts

But here, exit the Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff houses as in the universe of the wizard with the scar. After some trouble with the Warner, Manuel Roussel had to revise his copy because of the ban on reusing visuals and names from the Harry Potter saga. Not really a problem since Le Rocher Portail castle, which dates from the very beginning of the 17th century, already has some similarities in its history with the world-famous saga.

“We’re lucky to have a real set that has its own story,” explains Manuel Roussel. “The castle notably hosted a college during the Second World War, we were able to trace all this thanks to an incredible collection of documents that have been preserved. From the already existing material, my wife transcribed the story of the Rocher Portail by linking it to the world of witchcraft. We will therefore have four houses based on the real families who lived in this castle: Fauvedor, Cerfdelune, Busarde and Boucfleche”.

The characters created especially for the occasion such as the director Ludovica Lutterotti, the professor of botany Lady Pommecreuse, or Timéon Ruellan, the professor of the history of magic have been deposited with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) in order to to be able to open the Breton Hogwarts according to the rules.

Incredible enthusiasm

To give visitors a unique experience, special effects have been installed in several rooms of the castle in order to completely immerse themselves in the world of magic. Comedians in costume, talking paintings, diving into local legends and even automatons will also be on the program.

The event will be held during the 15 days of the All Saints holidays. It will be possible to choose between a visit of the place during the day (28 €), and a banquet formula in the evening which will include a meal and a sound and light show (99 €). “After receiving their letter of admission, the students will be welcomed by the teachers and the director,” explains Manuel Roussel. For those who come in the evening, they will be able to experience the banquet and the distribution in their new house before going to visit the different rooms of the castle”.

Opening of the ticket office in September

Since the project was made public, the enthusiasm of the fans is already there. “I could have already sold all the tickets, it’s madness”, welcomes Manuel Roussel. “There are families who call me every day to find out if they can book. Companies are also interested for their employees. Even foreign media have spoken of this project which will be unique in France”.

While waiting for the ticket office to officially open on the castle site The Portal Rock in september, the place already organizes witch hunts and flying broomstick races. Before finally tipping into a world of witchcraft and magic in the fall.
