Reading advice – A selection of books to devour for 9 – 15 year olds – IDBOOX

Here is a selection of three books, to dream, vibrate and take your mind off things for 9-15 year olds.

We will give you our opinion on: The In Betweenby Marc Klein (Stardust). Memories of the forest – The memories of Ferdinand Taupeby Mickaël Brun-Arnaud (L’école des loisirs). Wizards T1 : The sources of the shadow, by Maxime Fontaine and Romain Watson (Gulfstream)

The In Between

Summary

After spending most of her childhood in foster homes, 17-year-old Tessa Jacobs doesn’t think she deserves love – if not from her adoptive parents, certainly not from anyone in high school. But everything changes when she meets Skylar at the local cinema. Their budding relationship quickly leads to the kind of passionate love you only see in movies.
And Tessa is starting to believe that maybe she deserves her fairy tale, after all…
When tragedy strikes, Tessa wakes up…

Why read it

The In Between hit Netflix series, is more than a love story. The very recent Stardust label (Hugo) specializes in the imaginary: fantasy, fantastic, paranormal.

For this novel by Marc Klein, it is the last box that must be ticked. The author skilfully uses the dual timeline (“before” and “after”) to explore Tessa and Skylar’s story. The main flaw of the novel (and which we find far too often) is the insta-love between the two characters.

Barely met, already in love. But otherwise, the reading is fluid and touching. Marc Klein is interested in emotions beyond even romance, and touches on how our past constructs us. I particularly appreciated the importance of photography in the novel.

Memories of the forest – The memories of Ferdinand Taupe

Summary

In the forest of Bellescork, in the hollow of the oak tree where Archibald Renard keeps his bookstore, each animal who wishes can deposit the book he has written and hope that it will one day be bought. Since his memories fled him, Ferdinand Taupe desperately seeks to find the book he wrote to compile his memoirs, in order to remember the things he did and the people he loved.
Only one copy exists, dropped off at the bookstore years ago. But precisely, a mysterious client has just left with… Using old photographs, Archibald and Ferdinand embark on his footsteps in the forest, on a journey to the border of dreams, memories and reality.

Why read it

What a pen! The reading of memories of the forest is perfect for this spring – incredibly sensitive and delicate!

Mickaël takes us on a journey through the forest and the village of Bellechaussée. The story is that of a strong friendship, that between master Renard and Ferdinand, suffering from a disease similar to Alzheimer’s.

Under cover of adventures to find out who and where the famous “Maude” went, the author looks at important social issues such as the importance of family, love, but also old age, forgetfulness and disease. Sanoe’s illustrations are beautiful and dot the novel in the most enjoyable way. Not just for kids.

Sorcerers T1: Sources of Shadow

Summary

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Circus Palazzi! This evening, a breathtaking number with the burning of the marquee by the armada of invisible clowns. Come to kidnap your children, they will take away Déa, the young blind. Ernest the magician will go looking for her with the help of Kétinée the bewitcher and Kilma the marabout. Their quest will lead them to a hidden and supernatural world. But will their authentic sorcery powers be enough to save Déa? Stay with us, you are not at the end of your surprises…

Why read it

Gulfstream releases the first volume of a fantastic trilogy. In Wizards, the readership will be taken on a crazy adventure and will evolve alongside circus artists. It’s hard not to let yourself be transported by the pen of the authors, Maxime Fontaine and Romain Watson.

I regret that it is sometimes slightly confusing (events and characters introduced too quickly). Overall, “Sorcerers” offers colorful and interesting characters, many adventures and twists… which regularly seem to be unrelated… until this finale! A second and third volume have already been announced.
