Energy crisis: these passionate individuals who adapt and who do not give up Christmas lights

Each year, several Lorraine houses adorn themselves with thousands of light bulbs and garlands to make young and old dream. With the rise in energy prices, these illuminations will shine (a little) less this winter in Meurthe-et-Moselle. But they won’t go away.

Faced with rising energy prices and the risk of power cuts, fans of Christmas lights in Meurthe-et-Moselle are cutting back. They adapt their consumption to continue to make the Lorraine sky shine at all costs.

To 3,000 kilometers from Lapland, at 44b rue de Verdun in Lantéfontaine (Meurthe-et-Moselle), the illuminations of the Przybylski family house attract up to 20,000 people each year. This Christmas tradition, which has warmed the hearts of visitors for nearly 25 years, is back this year under the sign of energy savings.

End-of-year party enthusiasts have scaled back their ambitions and drastically reduced their electricity consumption. “We almost canceled everything because we don’t want to consume too much electricity compared to the other inhabitants, we don’t want to create controversy in this context of energy crisis“explains Mathieu Przybylski, 31 years old.

Above all, we want to make people dream, but we have drastically reviewed our organization and we have gone from 70,000 to 50,000 LEDs.

To maintain the custom, the family finally decided to do more “sober” this year. “Above all, we want to make people dream, but we have drastically reviewed our organization and we have gone from 70,000 to 50,000 LEDs. Usually, we light every evening between 5 and 9 p.m. but this year we have reduced to Saturday and Sunday only, from 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.argues the thirties.

On the program, until December 31 inclusive, six weekends in the colors of the most famous school of witchcraft, Hogwarts, and a sound and light show in homage to Harry Potter.

On the bill side, the Przybylski family will even save money compared to last year. The overall cost of the illuminations for the month of December will drop from around thirty euros in 2021 to less than ten euros this time.

“The price is not really the problem, our objective is above all to save energy. In all, it will only cost us between 7 and 10 euros in electricity for the whole month of December because LEDs consume little”insists Mathieu Przybylski.

The same goes for the mussipontain Christmas crazy people. Jérémie Pellenz has been decorating his parents’ house for the holiday season for 18 years, chemin de la Corderie in Pont-à-Mousson (Meurthe-et-Moselle).

“A Christmas without garlands is gloomy. The parties must remain magical, even if I will try to turn off half an hour earlier each day, it’s always a win. My 10km of illuminated LED garlands each evening is like lighting an oven for an hour in terms of electricity consumption. It’s a choice, we’ll make fewer cakes!” Jeremiah quips.

On the menu for the 2022 edition, 10 kilometers of light garlands every day from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. until January 8, decorations on the theme of fish, pancakes, mulled wine and candy distributions.
