Prime Video: only a few days left to see the best version of Dracula

What is the best Count Dracula movie? The question agitates enthusiasts of the genre. We have chosen our camp: it is that of Coppola. And you only have a few days left to see it on Prime Video.

Dracula is one of the most iconic characters in popular culture. For 125 years, he’s been a mainstay of literature, film, stage, comics, television… And it all goes back to Bram Stoker’s original novel, Draculapublished in 1897, which not only constitutes a milestone in the field of horror and English literature, but which also provided the model of the vampire, the one who has influenced much of our imagination for more than a century .

With the film Dracula, Francis Ford Coppola delivered his own interpretation of Bram Stoker’s novel in 1992. A remarkable film and quite faithful overall. This is arguably Coppola’s last major work to date. The cast is incredible; the costumes, sets and music are all outstanding. And Coppola (with the help of his son Roman) pulls off as many visual effects as he can on camera, giving it a surreal, timeless feel.

Coppola and screenwriter James Hart introduce the theme of love through time, with the character of Mina, played by Winona Ryder, explicitly written as the reincarnation of Dracula’s lost wife, despite her not appearing anywhere. in Stoker’s novel. They also incorporate the secret identity of Dracula, played by the incredible Gary Oldman, namely Vlad Tepes better known as Vlad the Impaler who inspired Bram Stoker in the creation of his character.

Gary Oldman is superb in the role, summoning those who interpreted Dracula before him: Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee, while delivering his own interpretation of the character to make him a true romantic and gothic hero. Anthony Hopkins is also excellent as a truly eccentric Van Helsing. As for Keanu Reeves, he is touching in the role of Jonathan Harker. Role which corresponds, at this moment of his career, to the model of the young first cut to make young girls dream.

We must also salute the performances of Sadie Frost, carnal and seductive in the role of Lucy who, with Dracula’s concubines among whom we find Monica Bellucci, and Mina on a register between repression and burning desire, makes this Dracula the most erotic version to date.

All the major plot elements of the book are present, many of Dracula’s powers (like that of turning into rats or mist) are finally brought to life. It should also be noted that this is the only adaptation to include a number of voice-over diary entries (by Van Helsing) in homage to the novel’s epistolary structure. The only major difference is that Coppola’s version transforms Bram Stoker’s monster into a tragic figure. In the end, this Dracula by Coppola is a masterpiece.

You have until December 31 to see this gem.
