PORTRAIT. Nora Granovsky, director: “our role is to be a storyteller”

When she stages shows, Nora Granovsky goes out to meet the public to develop territorial projects. A way to value the experience. For this, she uses the transversality of the arts.

The director Nora Granovsky trained in Paris, the perfect place to perfect her theater, with a very knowledgeable audience. But what was close to his heart was to compose shows in which all audiences can identify. She therefore developed her career in the north of France, near the slag heaps.

There is a purpose, to reach out to audiences to present theatrical works. Whether it is contemporary text or forms that work from the territory. We have been in residence a lot in the Pas-de-Calais, in Hénin-Beaumont, in Harnes, in Tourcoing, in Amiens… Now, we work on the Manège side in Maubeuge“says Nora Granovsky. “For me, it was necessary to break this divide between Parisian theaters, between Paris and the rest of the world, in order to create bridges between the worlds.

The director considers art as a medium to enhance the experience of people “who do not realize that their stories, their stories, can have a universal scope.

To illustrate these experiences on stage, Nora Granovsky relies on the transversality of the arts: the fact of mixing music with theatre, with dance, words with movements: “It’s obvious to me in relation to the stage as a space of composition. It is not contradictory. It’s an energy that circulates on a set: what it says, how it’s told and how it will affect the public.

His show Janis met with great success in Avignon. It is a creation that she wrote and directed, interpreted by the actress Juliette Savary, who is convinced to be the reincarnation of the singer Janis Joplin. “We have often reduced her to clichés, we talk about her in her relationship to men, her physique… We forget to talk about her music and the creative and innovative power she had at that time- the.” explains Nora Granovsky. “Suddenly the ghost of Janis will come back through the actress Juliette Savary and it’s a bit like the function of the theatre, to bring back the ghosts.

Going through the story of Janis like that, or other stories, is also the role of a director, it is to convey stories, artists, stories.

Nora Granovsky’s next project is the Ubergang festival, of which this will be the third official edition. A festival that will be held at the media workshop in Carvin on March 24 and 25 and at the Manège in Maubeuge on April 6, 7 and 8. The objective of the festival is to introduce women artists in their relationship to the transversality of the arts, in the form of shows, performances with dance, music and theater, exhibitions and readings.
