Montpellier car, motorcycle and eco-mobility show: “At the show, there will be good deals to be had for customers”

Departmental President of Mobilians, the union that brings together twenty-two professions in the automotive sector, and Peugeot agent in Montferrier, in the Hérault, Jean-Louis Besnard takes a proactive look at the difficulties facing the sector and the challenge represented by the Auto, motorcycle and eco-mobility show organized by Midi Libre and L’Agence, from November 25 to 27 at the Montpellier exhibition center, in Pérols.

Is a show like this an important moment for dealers?

Yes, extremely. We need that motivation. Need for the profession to present the best it currently has on the market. And because it is a well-known phenomenon that if you carry out actions and you have products, you create the trade! Competition energizes you. We are going to exhibit our most beautiful cars, the customers, who will have practically all the dealers gathered in a reduced perimeter, will be able to meet as many as possible in one day and the one who makes the best offer will win the market.

Do these appointments lead to sales?

First, they are contacts; sales are often signed at the dealership in the days or weeks that follow, but they are also initialed at the show, absolutely. And given the context, the objectives given by manufacturers to dealers, there will be good deals to be had for customers, we have no choice.

Unlike the Mondial de Paris, the vast majority of brands will be present…

I went to the Mondial de Paris, it was a bit sad, a crisis show… It started with the “yellow vests”, continued with the coronavirus, now the war in Ukraine, the missing electronic components and , above all, purchasing power. We see fewer people in the concessions, but on the other hand it is buyers who move, not walkers.

Do some not give up in the face of longer delivery times?

They know that. We will offer them what we have in stock and which best suits their wishes. It will not necessarily be the metallic gray car as the customer wanted it, but given the exceptional conditions he will have at the moment, he will buy the cheaper car and make this “dead end”. Those who are buying right now are doing great business!

I settled in 1973, it’s the seventh crisis I’ve faced since the oil shock of 1977; it’s a resilient industry, I’m not overly concerned. And if the sale of new cars is in crisis, people continue to have their vehicle maintained, we repair a little more. Ourselves, we are going to double the surface of our garage, we have just hired two people.

Do you experience, like other professions, difficulties in recruiting?

There is a lack of young people in the profession. Training exists, in high schools and training centers, but we have had a lot of difficulty recruiting for around ten years now. The training courses are not completed and, at the end of the course, we also lose some of the graduates, whereas this profession has never been so noble. Before, we got our hands dirty, now we have boys in white coats who handle electronics and computers, exercise a modern profession.

Do you remain optimistic, despite everything?

The first quality of an entrepreneur is his resistance to failure, he cannot capitulate.
