BMW M’s fiftieth anniversary year is coming to a close. The sports branch of the Bavarian firm unveils the BMW 3.0 CSL, a new sports car directly inspired by the eponymous model derived from the E9, which dates from the 1970s. Produced in a limited edition, the car is based on the M4 CSL.

This modern reincarnation of the famous BMW 3.0 CSL differs from the M4 CSL in many specific design elements. This coupé adopts wide wheel arches, an imposing rear spoiler with M Power logo, four exhaust outlets and a grille that is certainly prominent but more traditional than what BMW has accustomed its fans to in recent years.

Glued to the road, this new BMW 3.0 CSL also features yellow BMW Laser Light headlights, which are inspired by racing models such as the M4 GT3. The muscular character of the design is reinforced by 20-inch front and 21-inch rear forged aluminum wheels. The car sports an Alpine White Uni livery and decals in the colors of BMW M.

Under its hood, the modern version of the BMW 3.0 CSL features the most powerful straight-six engine ever used in a road-legal BMW M car. This 3.0 M TwinPower Turbo block develops 560 horsepower for 550 Nm of torque, and it is associated with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels only and the car is fitted with an M limited-slip differential as standard. BMW is careful not to specify the performance at the time of writing, but it should logically be close to that of the M4 CSL, which is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 307 km/h. However, the manufacturer indicates that the 3.0 CSL is equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes and an adaptive M suspension.

The interior of the BMW 3.0 CSL is also exclusive. There are M Carbon bucket seats but also Alcantara upholstery, or an engraved white gear lever on which the number 50 is engraved. Each cockpit is numbered from 1 to 50, since the production of this new BMW 3.0 CSL is limited to fifty copies only. It should last three months in total, within the BWM factory in Dingolfing, Germany. The price of the car is not disclosed.

In short

The acronym CSL — for “Coupé Sport Leichtbau” — stands for exclusive models for BMW. One of them, the 3.0 CSL, marked the 1970s. This mythical car is reinterpreted in the form of a modern model in 2022. Also called BMW 3.0 CSL, the car takes up the technical basis of the M4 CSL , but adopts a specific design. Its grille is notably more conventional in order to satisfy purists. The engine, meanwhile, is the most powerful straight-six ever seen in a road-legal BMW M car. This 3.0 M TwinPower Turbo block develops 560 horsepower for 550 Nm of torque. In addition to an Alpine White Uni livery set with decals in the colors of BMW M, the car is full of specific details, such as this white gear lever engraved with the number 50. The price is not specified, but only fifty copies will be produced by the Bavarian firm.
