Oops… There was a bug in the Animus. But for once, it’s for the greatest pleasure of the players who will be able to enjoy the latest adventures of Eivor with a week in advance. On our side, we rushed to Ravensthorpe to find out if the Viking epic ends in style.

Before telling you what we thought of the ultimate update toAssassin’s Creed Valhalla, it is important to come back to the prerequisites (which are still quite numerous). You must of course have finished the story of Eivor and declared “an interest in all the territories of England”, but also having eliminated all the targets of the Order of the Ancients, completed the stories of Asgard and Jotunheim, reached level 5 for the colony and finally built the barracks of Jomsvikings. Note also that what follows obviously spoils the end of the story. If you want to know as little as possible about the content of The Last Chapter and Shared History, the two new quests introduced by this update, you can directly find our overall feeling in the last paragraph of each part.

A dispensable Last Chapter?

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: The Last Chapter, transition with Mirage… What is Eivor's final quest worth?

A lot happened for Eivor on English lands. Dismantling of the Order of the Ancients, conquest of Saxon kingdoms, improvement of his camp, divine epics… But after the time of battles and conquests comes the time of rest and farewells. At the end of the game, Eivor has had to face the reality that is hers: she is the reincarnation of the Precursor Odin (just like Basim is that of Loki). And as the latter takes up more and more space, it becomes clear to Eivor that she will have to make a choice. No, she won’t let her guest from the past own her like Basim. Nor will she spend her life ignoring it. Eivor decided to live and learn with Odin, charting his own course. And for that, she sees no other possibility than to go in search of lands never before discovered by her people. Basim, now a contemporary viewer of Eivor’s adventures, is curious to see what the viking has in mind. He therefore uses the Animus to advance time and discover the end of Eivor of Ravensthorpe.

That’s the pitch of this The Last Chapter. But in game what does it give? Well, we must admit that we were rather disappointed. The Last Chapter simply consists of going to different characters (Guthrum, Aelfred, Harald…) to be a spectator of fragments of memory, which are in fact simple farewell cutscenes. What’s the point of making us cross Saxon and Norwegian lands to see Eivor tirelessly repeating the same goodbyes? No, the cutscenes are not uninteresting. They make it possible to conclude the arcs of the different characters while evoking historical elements such as the Christianization of the Scandinavian peoples. But even if it means getting back into the skin of Eivor, we would have preferred to share one last short adventure with these characters in order to bid them a real farewell. There, the player becomes nothing more than a banal spectator, a feeling reinforced by the astonishing presence of Basim who constantly breaks the fourth wall and is just there to observe.

All in all, if you had uninstalled Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and are wondering if it’s worth reinstalling, the answer is: not really. If this final quest introduces some interesting elements for the rest of the license (especially concerning modern Assassins and who will probably be the next one we will embody), there is not really any added value in discovering them in game. If you If you are used to following a content creator who planned to venture into this short farewell session, following it through him will be more than enough. But this final update for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has also brought some surprises that you may want to discover, this time, a controller or a mouse in hand.

Ubisoft has a little surprise in store for us: a cross fate quest with Roshan (The Raven and the Cuckoo), the famous mentor highlighted in the communication ofAssassin’s Creed Mirage. If you haven’t followed, Roshan is the character dubbed by the Iranian actress with the particular voice, Shohreh Aghdashloo. She was introduced to us as Basim’s mentor in the Unseen Brotherhood. For some reason that we don’t know (and that we may find out in Mirage), she is in England. If she is aging, she has lost none of her panache and her mastery of assassination. After getting Eivor out of trouble, she invites him to join her in a quest for revenge against a certain Al-si’la, a long-time enemy it seems. Does this mean that we can also find this character in Mirage? Nothing is less sure.

The mission itself is fairly standard for an Assassin’s Creed: you have to infiltrate a place to assassinate a character. But we see it as a way to introduce Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which will be a game more focused on infiltration and the initial mechanics of the license. The possibility of changing outfits to blend in a little more with the decor, the presentation of the situation to infiltrate as well as possible and the use of smoke bombs by Roshan are all elements that we will most certainly be able to find in Mirage , and it’s mouth-watering. But to do this, one point must be disregarded: infiltration is not necessarily Eivor’s strong point and it shows in the game. The gameplay of Valhalla struggles to match this quest for stealth, so the infiltration phase is not a moment of pure pleasure. Add to that the fact that Basim is not mentioned at any time, which seems quite incoherent, the too short duration of this aside and the too enigmatic (and therefore frustrating) presentation that is made of Roshan and you get a quest not devoid of interest but less interesting than the other Valhalla crossover (the quest A written meeting with Cassandra).

All in all, if you’re really looking forward to Assassin’s Creed Mirage, this quest might be worth it. But it is far from being dense and interesting enough to prove to be indispensable, unfortunately. Expected for long weeks now, the ultimate update of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla therefore has a bitter taste of disappointment… In our humble opinion, Eivor deserved a finish more epic and impactful.
