I declared my ways to you, and you answered me; teach me your statutes. Psalm 119. 26
Meditation on Psalm 119 (6)
In this 4th stanza (v. 25-32), the psalmist speaks of different “ways”.
The first mention is of his own ways – “my ways”. What did he do about them? He declared them to God and God answered him. Today we are in danger of declaring our “ways” to the world by telling everyone what we are doing, especially on social media. But that is not what we find in the scriptures: the psalmist declared his ways to the Lord, everything he did and how he did it on various occasions.
The disciples who had been sent by the Lord (Mark 6. 7), returned to him after their mission. “The apostles gather to Jesus; they told him everything they had done and everything they had taught. Then he said to them: You yourselves come apart into a desert place and rest a little” (vv. 30, 31). They told the Lord all that they had done and taught; he then took them aside and they all had a moment of personal fellowship with him.
It’s a good thing to tell the Lord everything, but when Paul and Barnabas returned from their mission trip and the congregation was gathered, what did they say? “When they arrived, they called the congregation together and told of all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the nations” (Acts 14:27). They told the believers what God had done with them. It’s different. It is not for us to tell others what we have done, but rather to declare what God has done through our various circumstances.
If we are in the presence of the Lord, we can tell him everything, because he values everything perfectly and we can be sure that he will listen to us. The psalmist can therefore add: “You answered me; teach me your statutes”. Let’s talk to the Lord about our situation, listen to what he wants to tell us about it, and also have the desire that he teach us his own “ways” (vv. 27, 32).
