Oh the joy of the holidays! The purchases, the preparations, the obligations, the race, the frenzy and then the exhaustion… for many, it is also loneliness or otherwise conflicts, discomfort or even difficult memories…

Whether we like this period or not, let’s face it, we really need a survival manual!

If we are honest, we can all observe that we often react by following only the strength of our emotional habits. And these automatic habits are simply based on too high expectations…inevitably disappointed. How many times do our dreams and desires not come true, or once they come true they leave us with a feeling of emptiness and dissatisfaction?

In all of these situations, our unhappiness can easily make us feel that life or others are unfair to us, or that we ourselves are to blame for everything that is wrong…and that depresses us even more.

“We don’t need to become unhappy just because things don’t go our way. So far, however, this has been our response to difficulties, but after acknowledging that it is not working, we are free to respond in a more realistic and constructive way. – Geshe Kelsang Gyatso – How To Solve Our Human Problems

Meditating allows us to revisit our emotional habits and open a space of freedom to generate valid and constructive dreams and desires.

Incorporating meditation into our core habits, even for a few minutes a day, is a proven way to care for ourselves and those in our lives.

For meditation enables us to learn to distinguish our own valid states of mind, which cause lasting peace and happiness, from those which are invalid, which cause delusions and suffering.

All delusions work like this: they project their own distorted version of reality onto the world, and then connect with that projection as if it were true. It is therefore imperative for us to learn to no longer follow these unrealistic expectations that doom us to disappointment and frustration.

Through the regular practice of meditation, both formal and informal, we will become familiar with these valid states of mind to the point that they will become our own reactions.

Why not spend the holidays that way instead?
