Exclusive survey of August 14: your program in summary

A small Portuguese archipelago isolated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and America, the Azores are one of the most unique places on the planet. Nine islands that offer an incredible range of natural landscapes reminiscent of the volcanoes of Hawaii, the moors of Scotland, the rice fields of Asia or the primary forests of New Zealand. An ultra-fertile land, with a mild and temperate climate, where everything grows. It is in particular in the Azores that we find the only tea plantation in Europe. A family business run exclusively by women.

For those who love preserved spaces and ecotourism, this is a dream destination. On the beach of Faja de Santo Cristo takes place a spiritual retreat combining meditation and surfing. There is only one way to get there: hike for two hours. Here, there is no telephone network or internet. A disconnection that Manuel and Maria, a couple from Lisbon in search of authenticity and wild nature, came to seek.

It is also on green tourism that the local government mainly relies. New concepts of eco-hotel and alternative accommodation (stay in trailer, yurt…) are born every year. But, in many places, hotels are being built that do not always respect the environment. Example with the Monte Palace Hotel, located on one of the most beautiful sites of the archipelago, a five-star hotel that is too big, too luxurious and too expensive. As a result, the hotel was deserted by tourists. It has now become an abandoned ruin.

But a much greater danger awaits the Azores. Since March 2022, one of the many volcanoes in the archipelago has been threatening to erupt. In Sao Jorge, 37,000 earthquakes have been recorded in just four months, raising fears of an impending disaster. The whole island is on alert. Eduardo Faria, the head of the Civil Protection of the Azores, is in charge of a possible massive evacuation. The army is mobilized. Gymnasiums are ready to receive the victims. If the situation seems to calm down somewhat, a major tragedy could occur one day, jeopardizing one of the last preserved paradises on the planet.

Another singularity, the Azores welcome criminals of Portuguese nationality expelled by the United States and Canada. Their name: the repatriados. A population that the inhabitants of the Azores do not see favorably and who live on the fringes.
Investigation in the Azores, an astonishing little Portuguese paradise lost in the middle of the Atlantic.
