The collection of donations to finance the restoration of the chapel of the Virgin known as the Circata continues in Avranches. “Our association has today collected nearly €20,000 from 130 donors, our objective being €45,000 by the start of 2024. This restoration should begin in the spring of 2023” indicates Loïc Houssard, president of association.

Two actions before Christmas

Thus, the association offers two events: the “Marmite de Saint Aubert” on December 3 and “The Night of Lights” on December 8. La Marmite is a meal at the Lycée Notre Dame de la Providence with a festive evening: Norman songs and traditional music performed by Francette Guérin and her accordionist. Watercolors and Advent wreaths, made by local artists, will also be on sale. The first edition, last year, was a great success with 120 guests and a profit of €1,500. The organizers hope for the same participation this year.

The Saint-Gervais district will shine with a thousand lights

In partnership with the city of Avranches and the Parish of Saint-Aubert, La nuit des lumière is organized with the support of 46 merchants in the Saint-Gervais district. The goal will be to create a flash of light in the neighborhood and to unite traders around an action specific to their neighborhood.

Each volunteer merchant will receive a candlestick and one or two electric lights for their shop window as well as a poster indicating that they are taking part in the word hunt. “We will give them a white panel on which will be written several words that people will collect to reconstruct a refrain, a poem, a sentence”.

At 7 p.m., after the mass during which the psalms relating to light will be highlighted, the participants in the word hunt will meet in front of the Basilica. From 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., texts related to light will be read aloud by the Friends of the Library and of the Book, texts which will be interspersed with songs interpreted by choristers from Avranches.

At 7:30 p.m., the people who have collected the words in the display cases will offer their reconstituted texts which will be read or sung by the choristers. After a mulled wine, around 8 p.m. in the Basilica, those who wish can, for a short time of meditation, listen in front of the Chapel of the Virgin to biblical texts on the light and radiance of the Virgin.

Candle lights on the windowsills

“We encourage individuals to put a point of light on their windowsill thanks to the candle lights which will be available free of charge at the town hall on December 5 and 6. But a simple candle can also suffice. Now, to limit energy consumption, this activity is only offered for 1.5 hours, from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m.,” concludes Loïc Houssard.
