Jazz in Marciac: Johnny Depp is the attraction of the festival

the essential
The 44th edition of Jazz in Marciac begins this Friday, July 22. Many artists are expected in the Gers village, including American actor Johnny Depp, guest of guitarist Jeff Beck and winner in June of his media trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Legendary guitarist Jeff Beck caused a stir in June when he announced that actor Johnny Depp would be at his side on stage for his concert at Jazz in Marciac, a few weeks after the end of his high-profile defamation lawsuit against his ex. – wife Amber Heard. “Johnny Depp did not appear in the initial line-up, admitted Jean-Louis Guilhaumon, the president of the Gers festival, in our columns on July 15. We are not going to sulk our pleasure. He will bring a lot to this evening, which is extremely rich. »

During this concert, which should not be the subject of a demonstration, the former member of the Hollywood Vampires and the British guitarist, whom the festival had wanted to program for a few years, should in particular interpret the titles of “18”, the disc that they released on July 15th. They revisit several rock classics, including “Isolation” by John Lennon and “Venus in Furs” by the Velvet Underground. Johnny Depp also wrote two titles of this opus: “This is a song for Miss Hedy Lamar” and “Sad Motherfuckin’ Parade”.

Renowned artists for this 44th edition

This evening of Sunday July 24 will be completed, under the marquee, by the concert of the singer Melody Gardot. “Tonight will be a shower of stars, promised Jean-Louis Guilhaumon. Each evening has its share of surprises. The festival, which opens this Friday with singers Dominique Fils-Aimé and Diana Krall on the stage of the marquee, welcomes, until August 6, a host of big names in jazz and its “cousin music”.

Among them, Nile Rodgers and Chic on Saturday July 23, Herbie Hancock on July 27, Keziah Jones on July 30 and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis who is back on August 2 and 6, with a new program. He took advantage of the post-Covid period and that of American democracy, with the departure of Donald Trump and the arrival of Joe Biden, to write “The Democracy! Suite”, a swinging instrumental reflection. “Jazz is the perfect metaphor for democracy,” says Wynton Marsalis. Another surprise from Jazz in Marciac: Ibrahim Maalouf & The Amazing Keystone Big Band & Guests pay tribute to Henri Salvador on Thursday July 28th.

Reconnect with previous editions

This 44th edition of the Gers festival reconnects with the pre-pandemic events and finds the level of initiatives of 2019, its benchmark year. Thus, from today, the Bis returns on two stages, on the town hall square and at the lake. Many ensembles will be on stage for free concerts and a very eclectic program, where resolutely modern jazz, its cousin music and its most lively roots collide.

The Astrada, the state-funded stage of national interest, also hosts 22 concerts this year featuring key musicians from the current jazz scene. Among these artists, the Theo Crocker Quartet, tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia, Taksim Trio, in collaboration with Welcome in Tziganie, or even Marion Rampal, named Victoire du jazz in 2022.
