The Environmental Protection Law is also gradually being harmonized with international laws with amendments related to environmental quality management towards the protection of people’s health. For the first time, it defines a residential community as a subject of environmental protection, which promotes the role of residential communities in environmental protection activities.

It also includes new provisions on the strict control of projects at high risk of negative environmental impacts; post-inspection for projects using advanced and environmentally friendly technologies; and eliminates administrative procedures.

Promote the sorting of waste at source

In particular, the new law also adds solutions to protect the components of the environment, promote the sorting of waste at source, and manage and treat waste.

Many localities across the country have taken the initiative to implement many solutions to protect the environment and to mobilize the involvement of authorities at all levels, residents and businesses in these efforts.

In the province of Binh Duong (South), targeting the objective of sustainable socio-economic development, local leaders have oriented industrial development in the direction of environmental protection. Since the approval of the law at the end of 2020, the Provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment has been actively reviewing the regulations to give related consultations to the Provincial People’s Committee.

Most industrial parks in Binh Duong have invested in building separate stormwater and sewage drainage networks with a total investment of over 2 trillion VND. In particular, a wastewater treatment plant with a daily capacity of 6,000 m3 was built in the Vietnam – Singapore Industrial Park II (VSIP II) of the locality.

Binh Duong prioritized attracting projects with modern and advanced technologies and restricted new projects outside industrial parks and industrial clusters. It also planned to invest in an automatic air quality monitoring system and to apply forecasting models, to draw up pollution maps for localities with a high rate of urbanization; and to set up an air quality alert system on the portal of the Provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

The province of Phu Tho (North) is actively reviewing enterprises and production units throughout the locality to guide them in the installation of automatic environmental monitoring stations.

Phu Tho Provincial Environmental Protection Office Director Nguyên Vinh An said that installing an automatic environmental monitoring system helps companies prove that their emissions in the environment are at a permissible level. This work has contributed to heightened public awareness of the responsibility to protect the environment, the official said.
