What is a lucid dream?

As indicated in the Larousse, a dream is a psychic production occurring during sleep, and which can be partially memorized. A dream also represents a fantasy that one wishes to see come true.

However, lucid dreams refer to dreams in which a person is aware that they are dreaming and has the ability to stay in the dream and control what happens there. The individual can modify the story of the dream, its content and even move within it at will.

The Sleep Foundation explains that sleep is divided into five stages; the first, called drowsiness, includes the first 10 minutes before falling asleep. Stage 2 is the stage of light sleep, which is when you are disconnected from everything outside, from your own environment, and your breathing and heart rate slow down.

Phase 3, called transition, lasts 3 minutes and brings you closer to deep sleep. Stage 4 is when you enter the deep sleep stage, which determines the quality of your sleep. Finally, phase 5 is REM sleep, a stage of sleep during which lucid dreaming occurs.

But… how to have a lucid dream? Let’s see it later in this article!

Wake up and go back to bed

This technique, also known as “wake back to bed” (WBTB), involves setting an alarm 5 hours after going to bed. When the alarm goes off, you stay awake for 30 minutes: the goal is to do something that will keep you awake, like reading a good book and, after half an hour, go back to sleep.

By practicing this method, your chances of lucid dreaming increase because you are choosing an activity that requires you to be fully alert during the process.

reality check

The practice of simple conscience will help you ask yourself whether you are in a waking or dreaming state, which is a very high cognitive process. This is because the level of metacognition or self-awareness is similar in waking and sleeping states, which brings you to a higher level of awareness while dreaming.

The mnemonic induction of lucid dreaming

In 1980, LaBerge created a technique called Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD). It is one of the first methods used by scientific research to induce lucid dreaming. MILD is based on a behavior known as prospective memory, which involves setting an intention to do something later.

To practice the MILD technique, you must try to identify a dream signal or anything that is irregular in the dream while you sleep. For example, if you are flying during the dream, you must immediately recognize this sign that you are dreaming and say to yourself: “in the next dream, I want to remember that I am dreaming”.

For the MILD technique, it is recommended that you write down your dreams as soon as you wake up because that is the only time it is still fresh in your mind.

dream diary

If you are interested in lucid dreaming, a good method is to write down all the dreams you remember in a journal. By writing down each of your dreams, you commit to remembering what happens in it from beginning to end.

This method will help you recognize the dream signals your mind is receiving and, therefore, improve your control and awareness of your dreams. Therefore, if you want to achieve better results, as in the previous case, as soon as you wake up, write down your dreams!

Reread your writing regularly and try to control it! And, who knows, you might even be able to dream the same thing and change the course of that dream!
