The Rosary of Saint Raphael can be recited at different times in life: in case of illness, during a trip or to find your soul mate.
Of the three archangels named in the Bible, Saint Raphael is probably the least well known. This is probably due to the fact that Saint Raphael is only found in the Old Testament. This archangel, whose name means “God heals”, is undoubtedly the patron saint of travelers and healing. But it can also be invoked to find a soul mate and bless married couples. Here is the rosary dedicated to him.
1His aspect
The rosary is made up of a series of nine beads, a series of three white beads and a medal of the Archangel Raphael.
2His history
Saint Raphael is the third Archangel recognized by the Catholic Church along with Saint Michael and Saint Gabriel. It is quoted only in the Book of Tobit: “I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand or present themselves before the glory of the Lord” (Tb 12.15).
The name of Saint Raphael remained absent from the sacramentaries and martyrologies until the 11th century. In France, his worship developed in Aquitaine, in Dordogne, in Tarn (Saint Raffel), in Auvergne and in Var (the city of Saint-Raphaël) and in Cabriès. In Spain in the 16th century, he is said to have appeared in Cordoba to the priest Andrés de las Roelas as the plague threatened the city. The following century Pope Innocent X authorized a local celebration in honor of the archangel on May 7, the date of the main apparition, to deal with a new epidemic. Saint John of God would also have received the visit of Saint Raphael who encouraged and instructed him.
In 1921, Pope Benedict XV extended his feast day fixed for October 24 to the whole Church with inscription at the roman martyrology : “The feast of Saint Raphael the Archangel, whose dignity and favors are celebrated in the sacred Book of Tobias”. Since the revision of the general Roman calendar of 1969, it is associated with that of the archangels Michael and Gabriel and celebrated on September 29.
3Why pray to him?
Saint Raphael owes his reputation as a healer and patron saint of “travellers on land, sea and air” to Book of Tobit. He is also invoked to find a soul mate since he accompanied Tobias to Persia, where the latter met his future wife, Sara.
4How to pray to him?
On the medallion of Saint Raphael, the following prayer must be made:
“You are Raphael the healer, You are Raphael the guide, You are Raphael the companion always helping human pain”.
On each of the first three beads, recite the I salute you mariein honor of Mary, Queen of Angels.
The following nine beads are in honor of the nine choirs of angels (Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Powers, Celestial Virtues, Principalities, Archangels, Angels). On each grain, in honor of a particular choir that is named, it is appropriate to recite this prayer:
“Holy, Holy, Holy the Lord, God of the universe. Heaven and earth are filled with your glory! Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. »
The rosary must be concluded on the medal with these words:
“Saint Raphael, angel of health, love, joy and light, pray for us”.
5Saint Raphaël, the patron saint of the city of Var

The town of Saint-Raphaël entered history under this name in the middle of the 11th century with the mention of the Romanesque church, built on the ruins of ancient buildings. In the 13th century, the building became the center of an episcopal domain which gave birth to a fortified village, the castrum around the seigniorial residence. The bell tower completes the landscape. The village is built and grows near the church which has become parish.
In 1690, the inhabitants of the village chose their coat of arms: the Archangel Raphael, represented in the company of the young Tobias. These coats of arms will be registered with the General Armorial of France drawn up by Charles d’Hozier between 1697 and 1709: “Azure, to the Archangel Raphaël leading the little Tobie, all of gold”. A statue of the Archangel Raphael holding Tobias by the hand was inaugurated in 2014. It is located at the entrance to the new port of the seaside town.
