Guillaume Cyr: discreetly

Even if we see him a lot, as much on the boards as on television and in the cinema, Guillaume Cyr remains relatively discreet in the media. On the occasion of the upcoming release ofArsenault & Sonsa thriller by Rafaël Ouellet of which he is the headliner, we take stock with an actor who has become essential.

Even before leaving the National Theater School, Guillaume Cyr was recruited by cinema aces. At the time when Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache — the famous duo of Untouchables – were preparing our happy days, their second feature film, the young actor was then in his second year of studies. He earned his living at the school’s general store during the summer season.

In our happy daysthe second feature film by Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, Guillaume Cyr was notably surrounded by Omar Sy, Marilou Berry and Jean-Paul Rouve.

“I then received a call from a casting agent. I thought she needed photocopies! tells, still incredulous, Guillaume Cyr during an interview granted to The Press. But no, it was for an audition, after which I quickly knew that I was going to have to spend three months in France. There was a character from Quebec in their film and they first looked for an actor there, then in Quebec, but they couldn’t find what they were looking for. As a last resort, the agent asked her friend Catherine Gadouas, who taught me singing, if there was not a big Quebec teddy bear among the students of the School…”

The cinema virus

Long before turning our happy days, the “big teddy bear” had already caught the cinema virus. As a teenager, he had assembled a collection of films by recording all the descriptions of the content of his videocassettes, skilfully indexed in “Duo-Tang”. In 15 years of career, Guillaume Cyr now has nearly 25 feature films in his filmography. small role in Babina (Luc Picard) to that of the blacksmith in The time grabber (Francis Leclerc), the actor is regularly solicited by filmmakers. His performance in Louis Cyr – The strongest man in the world (Daniel Roby), in which he played the role of Horace Barré, also earned him the Jutra for best supporting actor.

In 2014, Guillaume Cyr won the Jutra for best supporting actor thanks to his performance in Louis Cyr – The strongest man in the worlda film directed by Daniel Roby.

Yet it was the theater that stimulated his visceral desire to become an actor. During a performance of an eminently forgettable play, at the high school he attended in Sainte-Marie, his hometown, the young man, aged 15, remembers being amazed to the point of no longer being able to concentrate on what he was seeing.

“The only thing I was thinking about then was how do I find myself on a stage. It was then suggested that I go and audition at the start of the school year for the socio-cultural component, and I have been doing theater ever since. »

From the very first piece I played — Jean-Guy Poupart in Call me Stephane [de Claude Meunier et Louis Saia] —, I felt in my place, confident on stage, really at ease. When I was admitted to the National School, it was as if a seal of quality was placed on my dream. I then knew it was possible.

Against a type of job

Guillaume Cyr has an imposing physique. From the start, the actor refused to be confined to a single type of role and wanted to explore as wide a register as possible.

“I have the shape I have, he said. It can be an asset, but there is also a downside to this coin. Before being admitted to the School, I didn’t want the cliché of the teenager who doesn’t like himself. I didn’t want to end up playing bouncers either. The teachers were the first to make me understand that my body is my work tool and that I had to see it as an ally rather than an adversary. »

That said, the desire to go against my natural cast has always been very strong.

Guillaume Cyr

“I was made to play children at school, old people, I played a woman in my graduating show. It allowed me to show that my playing palette could go beyond the first type of job you think of. What’s more, it’s the roles that I shouldn’t have done that thrill me the most! »

Cet univers me colle bien à la peau. »

J’étais figurant sur Babine quand Antoine [Bertrand], with whom I was working for the first time, was already talking about a possible film project on Louis Cyr. We then toured together Castle in Sweden [Josée Dayan] and that’s when he told me about the role of Horace Barré. So I wrote a long letter to Daniel Roby, the director, asking him to audition me. The night when Antoine and I won a Jutra is forever in my head. It’s for life. »

Text: Fabien Cloutier
Director: Sylvain Belanger

Three characters nourished by an anger built from scratch by prejudices, received ideas and our own ignorance of others. With Louise Bombardier, Guillaume Cyr and Catherine Larochelle. “In my opinion, this is Fabien’s greatest piece. [Cloutier]. It was also the first time I was given a role of this importance in the theater, and my first entry into Fabien’s world. His universe sticks to my skin, I’m like a fish in water. And then, we both come from Sainte-Marie. When I play his texts, it’s as if they were in me, in my genes. Billy (The Screaming Days) also revealed me a little in the middle of the Montreal theater. »

The new life of Paul Sneijder (2015)

À vrai dire, ce n’est pas vraiment une adaptation puisque Catherine-Anne [Toupin] wrote an original screenplay based on his play, even better, even if it’s hard to believe the play was so strong. I will have the pleasure of meeting Lise [Roy] and Catherine-Anne on set. With Félize Frappier producing, Anne Émond directing and Catherine-Anne writing the screenplay — a wonderful trio of talented women — I really feel pampered. »

Of mice and mens (2018)

Théâtre
Texte : John Steinbeck (traduction Jean-Philippe Lehoux)

The time grabber (2021)

Movie theater
Screenplay: Fred Pellerin
Directed by: Francis Leclerc

The grandmother of a young boy reassures him by telling him that Death, suddenly appearing one lightning evening, has fled the village of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton since 1927. With Jade Charbonneau, Marc Messier and Céline Bonnier. “I’ve always been overwhelmed by the world of Fred Pellerin. My first memory of encountering his universe goes back to when I was still at school and we attended a show at the Metropolis, organized to defend some cause. Yvon Deschamps was there, other comedians too. And there, out of nowhere, comes a guy all alone, whom no one really knows, who told us something for about ten minutes. People were so captivated you could hear a pin drop. Fred’s storytelling skills are exceptional. I knew The time grabber by heart for years. When Francis Leclerc called me, I had a hard time believing it. It was just perfect! »

Having to replace at short notice his friend who embodies the Snowman, a man finds himself plunged despite himself into a nightmarish story. With Pierre-François Legendre, Guillaume Cyr and Isabelle Blais. “I’m thrilled with the success of this series because initially I often heard people say that when they read the premise they weren’t sure they wanted to watch it. I had a hard time understanding because it is precisely this premise — a mafia story with the Bonhomme Carnaval! — which thrilled me. I found this proposal quite original. We were the underdogs of the television season, but, in the end, people got a kick out of it. And then, this series also gave me the opportunity to meet Pierre-François Legendre, with whom I had never worked before. It immediately clicked between us. »
