Fujinon GF 20-35mm f/4 R WR: finally an ultra wide-angle zoom for GFX hybrids!

Fujifilm is making a comeback with a bang. Alongside the “new generation” X-H2 and XF 56 mm f/1.2, the manufacturer does not forget its range medium format and reveals a long-awaited ultra wide-angle zoom. the Fujinon GF 20-35mm f/4 R WR mastered layout, a constant opening to f/4 and a welcome tropicalization. Back to its features.

The first ultra wide-angle zoom of the GF mount

Fujifilm’s medium format camera fleet is growing more and more. With this new Fujinon GF 20-35mm f/4 R WR, the brand comes (finally) fill a gap in its ecosystem in GF mounts.

Until now, the “widest” zoom was none other than the GF 32-64mm f/4 R LM WR. But with its focal range equivalent 25-50mm in full format, it could not enter the category of ultra wide-angle. On the side of the fixed focal lengths, however, we will mention the GF 23mm f/4 R LM WRequivalent 18mm.

With its 16-28mm equivalent full-frame focal range, the Fujinon GF 20-35mm f/4 R WR should satisfy fans of ultra-wide fields. Architectural or landscape photographers should be in heaven.

A complex optical formula

To optimize image quality over the entire focal range, Fujifilm relies on an optical formula in 14 elements divided into 10 groups. There are 3 aspherical ED lensesas well as 3 ED lenses (low dispersion). Enough to control aberrations of all kinds, and guarantee maximum resolution – including on ultra-defined sensors.

The manufacturer highlights its Nano GI treatment (Gradient Index), which must limit the effects of flare and of ghostingas well as loss of contrast in backlight. The luminous – and constant – opening to f/4 is provided by a 9-blade circular diaphragm. We should thus be able to play easily on the plane separation and get a seamless bokeh. So many elements that we will have to check on the ground.

To facilitate lens maintenance, the front lens receives a fluoride treatment. In addition, the barrel includes 12 gaskets. A point that should appreciate those who photograph in a light shower or in dusty environments.

A light and compact ultra wide-angle

Ultra wide-angle lenses often have the reputation of being (very) heavy and bulky. A point that is verified on many optics for SLR. However : the trend is reversing – and we are certainly not going to complain about it.

Thus, the Fujinon GF 20-35 mm f/4 R WR measures 112.5mm long and 88.5mm in diameter. Measurements very reasonable for a UGA designed for medium format cases. The sharpest minds will note that these dimensions are (almost) identical to those of the GF 23mm f/4 R WR.

Furthermore, the front lens is flat enough to allow the fitting of 82 mm diameter filters. A point that landscape photographers will immediately appreciate.

Moreover, the lens weight turns out to be quite content (725 grams). For comparison, the GF 32-64mm f/4 R LM WR wide-angle lens measures ø 92.6 x 116 mm (folded) and weighs 875g.

Zooming is done internally, providing better feeling of balance – which Fujifilm does not fail to highlight. The manufacturer also highlights “the almost symmetrical structure of the lens, with the diaphragm in the center”, which should make it possible to “combine optimal correction of aberrations and compact and light structure”. In addition, the brand highlights magnesium alloydesigned to “combine lightness and robustness”.

Finally, note the aperture ringnotched by stop third. The latter is equipped with a position “Auto” (un)lockable at will – like on the brand’s most recent lenses. Fortunately, the “clicks” are quite discreet. Finally, a position “C” allows you to adjust the aperture directly on the body.

Our first review of the Fujinon GF 20-35mm f/4 R WR

Finally ! With this new GF mount lens, Fujifilm comes to end the wait photographers equipped with medium format cases – thus filling a real lack for landscape and architectural photographers.

We particularly appreciate the care given to the reduction in size and weight of the lens, as well as the feeling of balance which emerges. Likewise, the tropicalition is always welcome. All we have to do now is test this lens. very promising in the field, in order to verify whether its optical performance is up to our expectations.
