Burkina Faso: Head of State Ibrahim Traoré decides to keep his captain’s salary

(Ouagadougou, November 16, 2022). The President of the Transition, Captain Ibrahim TRAORE, chaired the weekly Council of Ministers on Wednesday. The Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Government Spokesperson, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, gave an update at the end of the Council’s work. He was accompanied by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Decentralization and Security, Boukaré ZOUNGRANA and the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Robert Lucien Jean-Claude KARGOUGOU.

The Council adopted a decree on the remuneration of the Head of State, the Prime Minister, the Presidents of institutions and the members of the Government. “At this level, the Council of Ministers decided to repeal the decree of April 2022. This repeal confirms the return to the provisions of the 2008 decree”, declared the Government Spokesperson.

“Notwithstanding the provisions of this 2008 decree, the President of the Transition, Captain Ibrahim TRAORE, has decided to keep his Captain’s salary”, maintained the Government Spokesman who underlined that the Head of State took this decision to “show this spirit of sacrifice which must inhabit each Burkinabè in the current situation of our country”.

In this same dynamic, the ministers also decided to devote 50% of their salaries for the month of November to the National Solidarity Fund for the benefit of people in difficulty, in particular internally displaced people.

In addition to this decree, several others were adopted during this Council. These include, among others, the decree on the status of Volunteers for Defense and Homeland (VDP), the decree creating a brigade for the VDP, the decree on the special status of the National Public Health Laboratory which becomes a National Agency security, the environment, food and work, the decree approving a contract for the construction of health infrastructure in the Hauts-Bassins region.

According to the Minister of Territorial Administration, Decentralization and Security, Boukaré ZOUNGRANA, the adoption of decrees relating to VDPs responds to the need to adapt to the change in the concept of employment of VDPs. “These two decrees will allow the VDPs to carry out their missions in good conditions”, indicated the Minister in charge of security.

For the Minister in charge of Health, Robert Lucien Jean-Claude KARGOUGOU, the adoption of the decree on the special status of the National Agency for Food Safety, the Environment, Food and Labor will allow this Agency to comply with regulations and above all to control the safety of food and the environment for the benefit of the populations.

During this Council, the Minister in charge of Health also took stock of the evolution of the situation at the Tengandogo University Hospital Center where agents had been attacked last week.

While wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, “the Council commended the resilience of the health workers and also the collaborative nature of the social partners and the professional orders with which consultations took place with a view to adopting urgent measures to prevent the occurrence of such situations”, maintained Minister KARGOUGOU.
