At that time appeared an edict of Caesar Augustus, ordering a census of all the land.
This first census took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
All were going to be registered, each in his own town.
Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to come to Judea, to the city of David, called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,
in order to register with Marie, his fiancée, who was pregnant.
While they were there, the time came when Mary was to give birth,
and she bore her firstborn son. She swaddled him, and put him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the hostelry.
There were, in this same country, shepherds who passed in the fields the watches of the night to watch their flocks.
And behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them. They were seized with great fear.
But the angel said to them, Fear not; for I bring you good news which will bring great joy to all the people:
it is that today, in the city of David, a Savior has been born to you, who is Christ, the Lord.
And this is the sign by which you will recognize it: you will find a child wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.
And suddenly there joined the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying:
Glory to God in the highest, And peace on earth among men whom he accepts!
When the angels had left them to return to heaven, the shepherds said to one another: Let us go to Bethlehem, and see what has happened, what the Lord has made known to us.
They went there in haste, and they found Mary and Joseph, and the little child lying in the manger.
After seeing him, they related what they had been told about this little child.
All who heard them were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.
Marie kept all these things, and went over them in her heart.
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, and which was according to what had been told them.
On the eighth day, on which the child was to be circumcised, having arrived, he was given the name of Jesus, a name which the angel had indicated before he was conceived in his mother’s womb.
And when the days of their purification were fulfilled, according to the law of Moses, Joseph and Mary brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord,—
according to what is written in the law of the Lord: Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to the Lord, —
and to sacrifice two doves or two young pigeons, as prescribed in the law of the Lord.
And behold, there was in Jerusalem a man named Simeon. This man was just and pious, he was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
He had been divinely warned by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he saw the Lord’s Christ.
He came to the temple, prompted by the Spirit. And, as the parents brought the little child Jesus to accomplish in his regard what the law commanded,
he received him in his arms, blessed God, and said:
Now, Lord, you let your servant Go in peace, according to your word.
For my eyes have seen your salvation,
Salvation that you prepared before all peoples,
Light to enlighten the nations, And glory to Israel your people.
His father and his mother were in admiration of the things that were said of him.
Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is destined to bring down and rise up many in Israel, and to become a sign which will cause contradiction,
and to yourself a sword shall pierce your soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be uncovered.
There was also a prophetess, Anna, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very advanced in years, and she had lived seven years with her husband since his virginity.
Remained a widow, and aged eighty-four, she did not leave the temple, and she served God night and day in fasting and in prayer.
Having also come, at this same hour, she was praising God, and she was speaking of Jesus to all those who awaited deliverance from Jerusalem.
When they had accomplished all that the law of the Lord commanded, Joseph and Mary returned to Galilee, to Nazareth, their city.
Now the child grew and grew stronger. He was full of wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.
The parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem each year for the Passover feast.
When he was twelve years old, they went up there, according to the custom of the feast.
Then, when the days were over, and they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem. Her father and mother did not notice.
Believing that he was with their traveling companions, they journeyed for a day, and sought him among their relatives and acquaintances.
But, not having found him, they returned to Jerusalem to seek him.
After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, listening to them and questioning them.
All who heard him were struck by his intelligence and his answers.
When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him: My child, why have you acted like this with us? Behold, your father and I were looking for you in anguish.
He said to them: Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?
But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
Then he went down with them to go to Nazareth, and he was subject to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart.
And Jesus grew in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and with men.
