Agenda: The Liturgical Days of Randol on August 22, 23 and 24, 2022 – Riposte-catholique

The Benedictine Abbey of Notre-Dame de Randol invites you to its liturgical days from August 22 to 23:

Schedules and proposed lectures: (subject to change)

The day before: (Sunday August 21)
• 6.10 pm: Welcome and presentation: a brief history of the liturgy.

First day: Monday August 22
• 8:45-9:45 a.m.: The liturgy, a ladder stretched between heaven and earth. We have arrived today at a paradox: the liturgy must be explained, whereas it is the liturgy that should teach us, in a living way, what the Christian life is. We would like to show here that the liturgy is the door to heaven, spiritual life at its highest level. Life is communication and exchange. The spiritual life is a commerce with God through knowledge and love, an “admirable commerce” The liturgy is also an “admirable commerce” between God and men. It is a ladder between heaven and earth, a “hole in the sky”: it allows God to bring his gifts down to men and men to raise their prayers to God.

• 11.20am-12.35pm: Mass: celebration of the sacrifice of Christ. According to Saint Thomas “The Eucharist is the perfect sacrament of the Lord’s Passion, insofar as it contains Christ Himself in his Passion. » How can we understand this great mystery through the Scriptures and theological reflection, without overlooking the real presence of Christ now in glory, and the reality of communion in the Church?

• 2:50-3:55 p.m.: Introduction to Gregorian chant. While Gregorian chant has always been recognized as the most perfect model of sacred music, and “the proper chant of the Roman liturgy”, it is too often a poor relation in our churches. This small initiation would like to give some simple and practical notions to taste its sacred character, its beauty and its universality.

• 4-5.10 p.m.: Beauty in liturgy. The purpose of this interview is to help raise awareness of what this beauty represents in the liturgical context. That this beauty is not an option but a necessity linked to the very nature of the Liturgy which is entirely oriented to the Praise of God, source of all beauty. It follows objective criteria of beauty in matters of sacred art, sacred music and also the discovery of a true pedagogy of beauty that the Church offers to the men of our time.

Second day: Tuesday August 23
• 8:45-9:45 am: Sign and sacrament, mystery and prayer. The liturgy is the place of encounter between God and man. If we meet, it is to communicate, to exchange. Which presupposes signs. God sends us signs: these are the sacraments; we answer him with our prayer by means of signs. We live in a universe of signs. Visual signs: logos etc. multiply ; pictogram, icon, acronyms.
We no longer pay attention to it. The liturgy is the Mystery of Christ in the worship of the Church, the Mystery of Christ and of the Church. As Dom Guéranger says: “The mysteries remain mysterious; but their splendor becomes so vivid that the mind and the heart are delighted, and we come to take an idea of the joys which the eternal sight of these divine beauties will bring us, which, through the cloud, already have for us such a charm . »

• 11.20am-12.35pm: Art, architecture and sacred objects. The liturgy is a true art, that is to say a way of expressing realities deeper than those which fall directly under our senses. For this, it calls upon all the resources of the human arts. But the liturgy is the Art par excellence, the highest activity of man here below, an activity which brings to bear all the resources of his genius to “act out”, before God, the ineffable realities of our Redemption. This game is the most serious there is, since on the one hand it realizes what it represents; and that, on the other hand, it is inspired by the Holy Spirit himself. It is therefore a question here of reviewing the instruments of this play of the liturgy, and of showing that beauty is essential to them.

• 2:50-3:55 p.m.: The “liturgical movement”, from Dom Guéranger to the Second Vatican Council.

• 4-5.15 p.m.: Angels in the liturgy.

Third day: Wednesday August 24
• 8:50-9:45 am: Mass: participation in the sacrifice of the Church. While we have restored the royal priesthood of all the baptized, it is a question of trying to better understand the notion of active participation, already desired by Pope Saint Pius X, to enter ever more deeply into the mystery of sacrifice. uniqueness of Christ and the Church, since Christ and the Church are all one!

• 11.20am-12.35pm: Art, signs, symbols and spiritual depths. All Christian art has developed as a function of the liturgy, insofar as the latter is the expression of the faith of the Church; especially faith in the Incarnation of the Word with all its consequences. The holy liturgy is this same faith, lived and “implemented” by the Christian people under the guidance of their pastors. From the beginning, the frescoes of the catacombs, the mosaics of early Christian buildings testify to these marvels of God. And immediately after the peace of the Church, in 313, it is the flowering of the basilicas, the development of the liturgical rites, the blossoming of the sacred song. The Middle Ages will see the apogee of Christian art, with the architecture of churches, the revival of sculpture, the art of stained glass, etc. The manuscripts, in particular, preserved by the thousands, calligraphed and illustrated with love, since the viiith century until the sixteenththartfully tell us about the liturgy, its world of symbols and its spiritual depth.

• 2:50-3:55 p.m.: Explanation of the gestures and symbols of the Mass.

• 4-5.15 p.m.: Bible and liturgy. What is the relationship between the two? That of the same aim: that of manifesting the Action of God, one through the marvels accomplished by Him in Holy history, the other of making this same divine Action present in the midst of men through the sacraments. and the whole Liturgy through the mediation of the Church of Christ. We will have many illustrations of this in the writings of the Fathers and of the whole Christian Tradition. From this correspondence springs the light that illuminates our participation in the Liturgy.

• 6:00 p.m.: Conclusion.
